A still of my own


I'm following Rosemary Gladstar's directions for distilling rosewater in Family Herbal. Well, not exactly, my pot is not big enough. I'm going to put a little bowl on that brick after it boils and let it simmer with the lid on and ice cubes on the lid to cool it. As a backup I'm also trying the version where you cover rose petals with witchhazel and water in a covered jar and let sit!

We have gazillions of rose bushes and even more rose hedges and I was one of those little girls who collected petals and tried to make perfume for her mother .... with the predictable results. Please share your recipe. I know lots of things to do with the hips but have never managed to find a good recipe for the blossom.

A bowl sits up on the brick under the lid. When the steam from the simmering rose petals hits the lid (cooled by ice), it becomes liquid again and drops into the bowl - distilled rose water! However, I boiled those poor petals to death. I have high hopes for the quart of rose petals bathing in witchhazel and water on top of the frig for 2 weeks!
