Haagan Dazs funds bee research
Dessert tonight got us talking about Haagan Dazs's worries over the honeybees. UC Davis is worried too. I'm quite taken with the idea of "colony collapse disorder." I've seen a hive just up and leave twice now. It's quite amazing, like they are all being called home to the mother planet, and then they vanish. I wish someone like John McPhee would write about this. I'm sure someone has. Let me know who.
All the honeycomb stitches and bee stitches in B. Walker sent me searching Ravelry, and I came upon Anne Hanson's Honeybee Stole and socks! I'd love to make a honeycomb blanket out of thick golden wool like Jo Sharp's Silkroad Aran. But really, I just want to buy pounds of La Lana's wools in all the yellows. There just isn't enough yellow yarn out there. I'm looking, starting now.
Great posting for a number of reasons: the bee issue (oh yes!) with some 'ladders' out of the 'pits'. Orchard mason bees are worthwhile attracting. And those socks - how beautiful. I much enjoy your blog.
ReplyDeleteYou've done it! When I finish my sister's pillow the next thing I cast on will be my Honeycomb Henley.
ReplyDeleteAnne could not be nicer, and she runs her shop really efficiently. I think we should all support her!
ReplyDeletethere was an article in the New Yorker about this, although not by John McPhee, but by Elizabeth Kolbert. It would appear you can read the whole thing online here: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2007/08/06/070806fa_fact_kolbert
