Olive pit bowls and a slow cooker

I am busy perfecting olive pit bowls and reading The Gourmet Slow Cooker. I want to be one of those people who has an incredible meal waiting for them in the slow cooker! Right now I am making rice pudding. Tomorrow? applesauce! I'm working my way up to chicken curry. By then I should be able to manage some large shallow bowls to serve it in.

  1. In case you think I'm slipping or snoozing, rest assured that the slow cooker book is Amazoning its way to me. It's stew season (although it doesn't feel like it)!

Now I can use a recommendation on a slow cooker. I'm tempted by the fancy one that has a metal insert that is a cooking vessel in its own right, for browning veg, etc. Is this crazy for a starter crockpot for one not yet fully committed to potcrocking? xoxo Kay

  2. Crock on! Rice pudding from the slow cooker is simply the best. I made one with coconut milk and served it with apricot preserves.

  4. I hopped over here from MDK. I am totally in love with my "slow cooker". My family lived on meals from the slow cooker when I was pregnant with my 3rd. But, our meals are super basic. I'll have to look into this Gourmet Slow Cooking.

  5. I'm here from MDK as well. My favorite crock po--, er, slow cooker recipe involves a beef roast, a can of cream of mushroom soup, a package of Lipton's onion soup mix, and a cup of red wine. Hardly worthy of your attention but ahhhhh! comfort food!

  6. This may distract me from my new obsession with my pressure cooker. No, not the type my grandmother had with the scary rattling valve. Think new, supersafe Swiss technology and risoto in less than 30 min, no stirring.

  7. and another MDK-er, who can't WAIT to make my sloooowwww cooker learn to be a gourmet. Is there a class she/he can take?

  8. I've been crockpotting since 1976! My favorite recipe is called Transyvania Goulash from the little cook book that came with my first Rival! Simply, it's 4 pork chops, a can of saurkraut, some poultry seasoning, and a can of undiluted cream of chicken soup. Sounds horrid, but serveved over rice or noodles, yummmmm! Found you though MDK blog. which I love!

  9. I love using my slow cooker, and absolutely must recommend "Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook" - it has *hundreds* of slow cooker recipes (my favorite is the Thai Peanut Pork, but there are so many other good ones to choose from as well). It's amazing how many recipes they came up with! Seriously, this is the best book ever...

  10. Yup, MDK too...guess what knitters do on Sunday morning?? All this slow cooker stuff is fine (I have two, but I'm lazy); what I want to know about is the BOWLS!! I adore bowls, love bowls, eat out of them exclusively where possible. I'm a Bowl Afficianado (husband spells that "a-d-d-i-c-t"). And those little black bowls? WONDROUS! I picture them full of garnet-red chili with rich Wisconsin cheese and a dollop of sour cream...perhaps some emerald chives on top..... (happy sigh)

  11. I'm here from MDK too--and just got a new SLOW COOKER (I'm learning not to call it a crock pot) for my b-day. Last week, pot roast, this week? Well, maybe I need to look into this gourmet slow cooker book....

  12. Hopped over from MDK!

The slow cooker is my best friend in winter. My current favorite "recipe" is to toss a chuck roast in and then dump a jar of pepperoncini peppers on it. Lovely! Good on hoagie buns or with some kind of roasted potato as a side.

  13. Another MDK-er finding my way here. It's a cliche, but true: I love your blog!

My favorite slow-cooker tip is to simmer down the wine in a recipe to reduce it before adding it to the pot. Actually, I do this no matter the cooking method, but it really makes a difference in the slow cooker.
